my eyes hurt
thats what im thinking at the moment. hello and welcome to nicks blog for thursday night. today i was at work from 4-7 teaching children maths. mmm. one girl.. seemed so good at combos to 10 last week [combos to ten is like "__ + 7 = 10" and "does 8+3, 6+4 or 9+2 make 10?" and crap like that] and this week she like sucked. bad.
very ohmygod-i-kid-you-not example:
question on computer screen: " ______ + 10 = 10"
now all of us intelligentsia know that the answer which goes where the line is, is ZERO.
nick: so, if i had nothing and i wanted to make ten, how much would i have to add to the nothing?
girl: *blank* ummmm *sits thinking*
nick: *brings over empty box* okay. heres a box. whats in it?
girl: *blank*
nick: there's nothing in here. right?
girl: ..mm hmm *nodding*
nick: okay. so if i wanted to put TEN things into this EMPTY box, how MANY things would i need to put in it?
girl: *blank* ..four?
nick: *puts four card things in the box* ..if i put FOUR things in the empty box, how many things would i have?
girl: *blank*
nick: i'd have..
girl: ...
nick: i'd have FOUR things wouldn't i?
girl: ...yep. *nods*
nick: okay so if i had ZERO things in the box and i wanted to have TEN things in the box, how many things would i need to put in the box?

even when she got it right.. i think she was still guessing. but for the sake of my sanity, let's say she understood what we were talking about.

Okay, that's quite hilarious. But the question and the explanaition don't match. The answer the girl gave was 10, but the answer required was 0. Coincidence? I think not.
However, on the other hand, I have fingers. And on the other foot? Toes.
So everyone has (atleast) 20 little digits which they can use to count things with. So maybe use them... or eat them. Your choice really.
But do you really want to live life on the edge? So far out of sight that you can only be described to be an insignificant speck on the entire horizon? Do you want to surrender your life to hard-core doctor titles like "infectious diseases" and eating unpealed carrots? Swallowing watermelon seeds? Changing the brand of toilet roll you use every single day?!
No Nick, I think not.
So perhaps you'll think twice you try one of your box-related-stunts. Or think twice before you corrupt a little girl into thinking cards are mere objects to help us count.
Maybe she wasn't stupid at all? Maybe she was just confused at YOUR stupidity. Sitting there, perplexed as to why you'd reduce yourself to such hopeless childish immature antics involving 4 cards and a box. Or maybe she was just visualising you being stuffed into the box, and sent away to New Zealand?
Or maybe I'm attributing to much geniusness and imagination to a meagre child. And that your efforts will be the only hope for her in the future? And she will be reduced to use the hexidecimal system or binary because she simply can't comprehend the significance of the number 10.
Oh the humanity, what a sorrowful world we live in.
And I can't believe this comment/rant actually maintained some degree of relevance to your post. You can congratulate me later =).
