stereotypes and refugees.

gagagahh. chem test!! study study study. taking a break for now. umm.. some interesting stereotypes which are kinda true:

You know you’re cambo if:

- youre not really full until you’ve had your rice
- you don’t really want to tell other people what prahok is
- your parents hate viets
- karaoke is mum and dads number one past time
- you eat kfc and charcoal chicken with rice

You know youre teochiu if:
- you have a hard time explaining to others where youre from (im chinese.. but not mandarin.. and not Cantonese.. and my parents aren’t from china.. but I was born here..)
- you love mue!
- you communicate with your parents in 3 or 4 languages
- you’ve been hit with thongs, chopsticks, rulers, feather dusters…
- your parents/grandparents have heaps of crazy refugee stories about wars in SE asia and old china

haha okay stop now. speaking of crazy refugee stories.. my mum was telling me some after dinner tonight. hahaha she went to her ‘khmer women’s group’ or *khmae voo-min grrrup* as she calls it and they were talking about funny stories when they first arrived in aus/nz from Cambodia.

one woman went to a vet for some reason and got introduced to a lady called ‘katrina’ and she was like *sorry? cat.. trainer?* hahahaah

another woman had a taste of salami when she first came and she really liked it. so she went shopping with her mother in law one day and the mother in law is like

*look! salami! and its so cheap! only 50c!! AND ITS SO BIG TOO!! BUY IT.*
lady: ooooh.. but look! its got pictures of dogs and cats on it.. maybe its just animal food?
mother in law: nah.. its just decoration! buy it! its so cheap!!
lady: fills her trolley half full with pet food

HAHAHA and they get home and taste it and its like *hmmm.. this doesn’t taste like salami? and its got bits of bones in it! eww what is this?* BAHAHAH omg. and then they showed their sponsor and she told them what it was lol. i love refugee stories. it shows you what happens if youre taken somewhere that youre completely unfamiliar with.. very interesting human interest stories.

speaking of language difficulties. when my grandma first came to nz she caught the bus to go from home to work at the factory. and one day she didn’t bring any money and the conductor asked for her ticket and she just yelled at him *NO SPIK INGLEES!!* and the guy just shrugged and walked away. HAHAHA GO AH MA!! my grandparents and all their stories are so hilarious.

anyway. I think that’s enough for now. maybe ill have some more refugee stories another time lol. if I can remember any. BYE!
